  • Patricia De Lille is the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure of the Republic of South Africa from 30 May 2019.

    She is a Member of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

  • Patricia de Lille was elected as Member of Parliament from 1994-2010. In 2010, she became a member of the Western Cape Legislature and MEC for Social Development until 2011.
  • De Lille was elected as the Executive Mayor of Cape Town in 2011-2018 and became the first Mayor to serve a full five-year term in the democratic dispensation since 1994. She served as a board member of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy and was Chairperson of the Global Parliament of Mayors.
  • Whilst she was a member of parliament she was part of both the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians against Corruption and the African Parliamentarians Network against Corruption. De Lille was the first politician to expose corruption in the controversial Arms Deal in South Africa ultimately leading to the investigation and prosecution of some people. She has written 2 books; one on governance, an autobiography and she is busy with the third book – ‘The View from the City Wall’.
  • De Lille became the first woman to be recognised as an Honorary Colonel in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in 2006 and a trustee on the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund.
  • She was also fondly referred to by former President Nelson Mandela as his favourite opposition politician.
  • Under her leadership, Cape Town has widely been regarded as the best run metro in South Africa and has received close to 90 international awards including taking the top spot on the prestigious New York Times’ list of 52 Places to Go in 2014 and the winner of the 2015 C40 Cities Award for Adaptation for the City’s successful Water Conservation and Water Demand Management Programme (WCWDM). Cape Town was also awarded the World Design Capital for 2014.
  • Accountability and clean governance has been a trademark of her tenure with the City achieving 4 consecutive clean audits and holding the highest possible credit rating for a local government. Under her direction, the City of Cape Town has pioneered the Transit Orientated Development Strategic Framework, the MyCiTi Bus Rapid Transit System.
  • Cape Town has also acquired a global reputation for its contribution and membership in numerous international initiatives for cities including the C40 Cities and 100 Resilient Cities.
  • On 2 December 2018, De Lille announced the formation of GOOD, a political movement that contested the South African elections on 8 May 2019. She is the GOOD Leader.
