The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is one of the government's key initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty and providing income relief through short- to medium-term work opportunities for poor and unemployed South Africans. The programme is coordinated by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) and implemented by public bodies across all spheres of government, as well as Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs), in accordance with their respective mandates and existing budgets.
The Non-State Sector (NSS) is an innovative government initiative that mobilises partnerships with Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs). The purpose of these partnerships is to provide NPOs with a wage subsidy to increase the creation of work opportunities for unemployed and poor South Africans through the delivery of public and community services. The Non-State Sector is managed and implemented by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) on behalf of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI).
