The Independent Development Trust (IDT) joined the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Dean Macpherson and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Martin Meyer during an official visit to His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and Amakhosi at the Mashobeni Royal Palace in Nongoma.
Led by the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees Ms Zimbini Hill, the IDT presented its mandate, current portfolio of projects and strategic priorities for KwaZulu-Natal with a particular focus on the Nongoma District and the surrounds. The presentation outlined the IDT’s role in implementing social infrastructure that restores dignity, creates jobs and supports inclusive rural development.
The IDT continues to implement key projects in partnership with the Departments of Health and Education, focusing on the construction and upgrading of schools, early childhood development centres, community health facilities and road rehabilitation initiatives across the province. Current and upcoming projects include Musa Special School, Kwaziphethe Secondary School, Mthombowesizwe High School and Lethukukhanya Primary School. These developments are designed to expand access to quality education and essential social services for rural communities.
The IDT reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with traditional leadership structures and government at all levels to accelerate the delivery of infrastructure that changes lives. The Board emphasised that the IDT’s work extends beyond construction, it includes job creation through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), skills development and sustainable community empowerment.
Speaking at the engagement, Ms Hill highlighted that His Majesty’s endorsement of the EPWP reform and the social facilitation framework provides strong leadership for the implementation of projects in rural areas. “We are deeply honoured by the King’s support and his vision for development that is rooted in community participation, dignity and
accountability. The IDT stands ready to work with Traditional Leaders and Client Departments to deliver infrastructure that truly serves the people,” she said.
The engagement marks a significant milestone in strengthening partnerships between the Ministry, Provincial Government and the IDT to drive rural development, economic empowerment and inclusive service delivery in KwaZulu-Natal.
